When you are choosing between gold engagement rings, the question of colour is easy to leave until last, after the stone, after the shape, after the budget conversation. We would gently turn that around. The metal is what your hand touches every day for the rest of your life, and it is the part of the ring that will ask something of you in return.
So here is the honest version of the three golds, written from our bench in Chichester rather than from a brochure. What each one is, how each one ages, what each one costs you in upkeep, and how each one changes the way a diamond looks.
Why gold engagement rings are never pure gold
Pure gold is soft. Press a fingernail into it and you leave a mark. It would not hold a stone for a week of ordinary wear, let alone a lifetime.
So we alloy it. Other metals are melted in with the gold, and those metals do two things at once: they harden it, and they change its colour. Yellow, white and rose gold all start from the same yellow metal. What separates them is what our goldsmiths mix in.
That single fact explains almost everything that follows.
Yellow gold
Yellow gold is gold alloyed with silver and copper in roughly balanced proportions. It is the colour gold actually is, warmed or cooled slightly by the mix.
It is the most forgiving of the three in daily life. There is no plating to wear off, so a yellow gold ring twenty years old is still the colour it was on the day it was made. It picks up fine surface scratches, as all gold does, and those scratches settle into a soft glow that many people prefer to the original polish. A few minutes at our bench brings back the shine whenever you want it.

White gold
White gold is yellow gold alloyed with white metals — palladium, and in some alloys nickel — to neutralise the yellow. That alloying takes it most of the way to white, but not all of it. Left alone, white gold has a faint warm-grey cast.
So it is finished with rhodium: a thin, hard, bright white plating applied over the surface. Rhodium is what gives white gold its crisp mirror whiteness.
And this is the part we would rather you heard from us than discovered later. Rhodium plating wears. It thins where the ring rubs — the underside of the band, the shoulders, the edges of the setting — and as it goes, the warmer gold beneath begins to show through. It is gradual, and it is completely normal.
Re-plating is a quick workshop job, and most white gold rings want it every one to three years depending on how hard they are worn. Hands that are in and out of water, gloves and gym equipment go through it faster than hands that are not.
None of this is a reason to avoid white gold. It is simply a commitment, and we would rather you made it knowingly.

Rose gold
Rose gold is gold with a higher proportion of copper. The more copper, the deeper the blush.
Copper is also the hardest of the common alloying metals, which makes rose gold the most durable of the three in everyday wear. It does not have a plating to lose, so like yellow gold, its colour is permanent. Some rose gold deepens very slightly with age as the copper at the surface oxidises, which we think is one of its quieter pleasures.
The caution with rose gold is matching. Every workshop mixes its rose a little differently, so a rose gold wedding band bought elsewhere years later may not sit exactly with your engagement ring. If you think you will want a matching band, we will note your alloy and make the pair from the same mix.

9ct or 18ct
This is a separate question from colour, and it trips people up.
The carat number tells you how much of the metal is gold. 18ct is three quarters gold. 9ct is a little over a third. Everything else is alloy.
18ct has the richer, deeper colour — a yellow that is unmistakably gold, a rose that is fuller, a white that needs less work to neutralise. It also holds more of its value in metal content, because there is more gold in it.
9ct is harder, because there is more alloy doing the hardening. It resists scratching and denting better than 18ct, and it is considerably more accessible. Its colour is paler and cooler across all three shades.
Neither is the correct answer. A ring that will be worn through gardening, hospital shifts or a hands-on trade has a genuine argument for 9ct. A ring where colour depth matters most has a genuine argument for 18ct. We will tell you which way we would lean for your life, and then we will make whichever you choose properly.
How gold colour changes the diamond
Comfort and fit are what matter most once the ring is being worn every day.
For natural diamonds, colour is graded on a D to Z scale, running from colourless at D through progressively warmer tints. Lab-grown diamonds are assessed by GIA against the same 4Cs, though the form of report issued for a lab-grown stone may differ from that of a mined one.
Here is what matters at the bench. Metal colour reflects into the stone. A diamond set in yellow gold picks up warmth from the metal around it. A diamond set in white metal picks up coolness.
Which means:
- A warmer-toned diamond often looks better in yellow or rose gold than in white. The metal and the stone agree with each other, and the warmth reads as intentional rather than as a flaw. In a bright white setting, that same stone can look faintly yellow by contrast.
- A very colourless diamond shows its whiteness most emphatically against white metal. Set in yellow gold, some of that hard-won colourlessness is simply given away to reflection.
There is a practical consequence. If you love yellow gold, you may not need the coldest, most colourless stone — a warmer diamond can look beautiful against warm metal, so the highest colour grade is not always the right choice. It is a conversation we have with clients regularly.
Two metals at once
You do not have to choose only one. A white setting on a yellow band gives you the cool white claws that flatter a colourless stone, with the warmth of gold against the skin.

Skin, allergies and comfort
Some white gold alloys contain nickel, which some people react to. If you have ever reacted to a watch back, a belt buckle or costume earrings, tell us before we begin. We can work in a nickel-free white gold alloy, or in platinum, which is naturally white and does not need plating at all.
Yellow and rose gold rarely cause trouble, though very sensitive skin occasionally reacts to the copper in a deeper rose. Higher carat means less alloy and less to react to, which is one more argument for 18ct in a sensitive hand.
Metal and setting go together
The setting style should influence the metal, not the other way round.
Fine, delicate settings — thin claws, a knife-edge band, a slender halo — benefit from a harder metal, so 9ct or platinum will hold their shape better over time than soft 18ct.
Rubover and bezel settings wrap metal around the stone, so the metal colour touches the diamond directly and its influence on the stone's apparent colour is at its strongest. Worth thinking about carefully.
Claw settings put less metal near the stone, so colour transfer is gentler and you have more freedom.
If a lab-grown diamond is on your list, it is worth knowing they typically cost 20-40% less than a comparable natural diamond.
Common questions
Does white gold turn yellow? Not the gold itself. The rhodium plating over it thins with wear and lets the warmer alloy underneath show through. Re-plating restores it.
How often will white gold need re-plating? Typically every one to three years, depending on how hard you wear it. We do this in our own UK workshop.
Is 9ct gold real gold? Yes. It is hallmarked gold, with a lower gold content and a higher proportion of hardening alloy. That is what makes it harder and more accessible than 18ct.
Can I mix a yellow gold band with a white gold engagement ring? You can, and many people do. The one thing to watch is wear: two rings sitting together will rub, and a softer metal will give way to a harder one over the years.
Which gold holds a diamond most securely? Security comes from the setting and the goldsmith more than the shade. That said, harder metals — 9ct gold and platinum — keep fine claws in shape longer than 18ct.
