I used to go to the previous jewellers on this spot for years, so I popped into the new jewellers, Griffin & Co, on Monday to get a couple of rings repaired. They were badly bent and very dirty, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

What is the difference between a family crest and a coat of arms?

A coat of arms is the full, complete heraldic design that represents a family or individual. It typically includes the shield, supporters, helmet, and motto.

The family crest is just one part of the coat of arms—the three-dimensional element that sits atop the helmet. When people refer to a "family crest," they are often referring to the primary symbol used on a signet ring.

Historically, signet rings were most often worn on the little finger of the non-dominant hand.

This was practical for two reasons: it made the ring easily accessible for sealing documents with hot wax and ensured it did not interfere with writing.

While there's no strict rule today, the tradition of wearing it on the pinky finger continues as a classic and elegant style choice.

A traditional signet ring is reverse-engraved, creating a mirror image of the crest.

When pressed into hot sealing wax, the ring leaves a clear, correct-reading impression.

This was historically used to authenticate legal documents, letters, and other important papers, acting as a unique and verifiable personal signature.
