Frequently Asked Questions about White Gold Wedding Rings

White gold is an alloy created by mixing yellow gold with white metals (like silver or palladium).

Because gold is naturally yellow, white gold has a slight warm undertone. To give it that brilliant, icy-white finish, we plate it with Rhodium (a platinum family metal).

Over time, this plating will wear off—typically every 1 to 2 years depending on wear—revealing the warmer metal beneath. This is completely normal, and we offer a professional re-rhodium plating service at our Chichester workshop to restore your ring to its original bright white sparkle.

The main difference is the gold content and weight.

  • 18ct White Gold contains 75% pure gold. It is heavier, denser, and traditionally considered more luxurious. It is often the preferred choice for matching high-quality engagement rings.
  • 9ct White Gold contains 37.5% pure gold. It is harder and more affordable than 18ct, making it a durable option for those on a budget or with manual jobs.
Both look identical when rhodium plated, so the choice often comes down to budget, weight preference, and matching your engagement ring.

This is our most common question!

  • Choose Platinum if: You want a naturally white metal that never needs plating, is hypoallergenic, and is the most durable option for a lifetime of wear.
  • Choose White Gold if: You prefer a lighter-weight ring on your finger, or if you are working within a specific budget (as white gold is generally more affordable than platinum).
However, if your engagement ring is Platinum, we strongly advise choosing a Platinum wedding band to match.

We generally advise against mixing metals. Platinum is significantly harder and denser than white gold. If worn together, the harder platinum ring will act like a file against the softer white gold ring, causing it to wear down and thin out much faster than normal.

For the longevity of your jewellery, it is best to match 18ct White Gold with 18ct White Gold, and Platinum with Platinum.

Yes, white gold is a very malleable metal and is relatively straightforward to resize. Whether you choose a 9ct or 18ct band, our goldsmiths can size the ring up or down in our workshop. Note that after resizing, the ring will need to be polished and re-rhodium plated to ensure the join is invisible and the finish is uniform.
