Marquise vs. Pear
Welcome to the final post in our "Guide: Gemstone Cuts" series!
We've covered the rectangles and the rounds, and now we're diving into two of the most elegant "fancy" shapes: the Marquise Cut and the Pear Cut.
Both of these shapes are brilliant-cut, so they are packed with sparkle. But their true magic lies in their distinctive, finger-flattering silhouettes.
See Them in Action: The 'Fancy' Favourites
The regal Marquise or the graceful Pear? These unique 'fancy' shapes truly come to life on the hand, and their sparkle is mesmerising. See them up close in our Instagram reel.
The Pear Cut: The Teardrop
The Pear Cut (also known as the "Teardrop") is a beautiful hybrid, combining the sparkle of a Round brilliant at its base with the elegant point of a Marquise at its top.
-
The Look: A graceful, asymmetrical teardrop. It's a very romantic and sophisticated shape.
-
The Vibe: Elegant, unique, and graceful. It's a perfect choice for someone with a distinct sense of style.
-
Key Consideration: Symmetry is everything. A beautifully cut Pear should have a perfectly rounded base and a point that aligns with the centre. In a bespoke setting, we always protect the delicate point with a v-claw or a bezel to keep it secure.
The Marquise Cut: The Regal
With its two pointed ends and a long, narrow body, the Marquise Cut is all about drama and elegance. Legend has it the shape was commissioned by France's King Louis XV to resemble the lips of his mistress.
-
The Look: A long, boat-shaped ("navette") cut with two sharp points.
-
The Vibe: Regal, dramatic, and a little bit vintage. It makes a serious statement.
-
Key Consideration: The Marquise cut creates the illusion of a much larger diamond. Its elongated shape covers a lot of the finger, making it one of the most flattering and "slimming" cuts available. Like the Pear, its two points must be protected.
Head-to-Head: Which One is for You?
| Feature | Pear Cut | Marquise Cut |
| Shape | Asymmetrical "Teardrop" (one point, one rounded end) | Symmetrical "Navette" (two pointed ends) |
| Vibe | Graceful, Romantic, Unique | Regal, Dramatic, Vintage-Flair |
| Finger Effect | Excellent. Elongates the finger. | Maximum. Creates the longest, slimmingest look. |
| Key Feature | Its unique, hybrid shape. | Its dramatic length and regal history. |
Our Bespoke Recommendation
Choosing between these two comes down to the kind of statement you want to make.
-
Choose a Pear Cut if: You love a romantic, graceful look. It's softer than the Marquise and offers a unique style that can be worn point-up or point-down.
-
Choose a Marquise Cut if: You want a bold, dramatic, and incredibly flattering ring. It's a true statement piece that feels both vintage and modern at the same time.
