Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most personal decisions you will ever make, and it is also a practical one. You have a sense of what you would like to spend, and you want that to go as far as it possibly can. Lab-grown diamonds have opened up a genuinely useful way to think about this, and we would love to walk you through what they can mean for your ring.
This is a guide about value rather than ethics. If it is the origin story of these stones that interests you, we have written about that elsewhere, and we link to it below. Here, we want to talk plainly about what the same outlay might be able to do.
The one figure worth remembering
A lab-grown diamond typically costs 20–40% less than a comparable natural diamond. That is the number to hold on to, because everything else in this guide follows from it.
A “comparable” stone means one matched as closely as possible on the qualities that shape a diamond's character — its carat weight, its cut, its colour and its clarity. When you compare like for like in that way, the lab-grown stone tends to sit lower in cost. That difference is not money saved in the abstract; it is room to make different choices.

What that difference lets you consider
Because the starting point is lower, the same overall outlay can potentially go further. We would never promise a particular result — every ring is quoted individually and every couple's priorities are different — but here are the directions people often explore.
- A larger centre stone. If presence matters most to you, the difference in cost can be a reason to look at a bigger stone than you first imagined.
- A higher cut grade. Cut is what gives a diamond its life and sparkle. Some couples would rather keep the size and put the difference toward a more finely cut stone that catches the light beautifully.
- A better setting. The mount holds everything together and does a great deal for how a ring feels on the hand. That difference might go toward a more considered setting, a particular metal, or hand-finished detailing.
None of these is the “right” answer. They are simply possibilities, and the pleasure of a bespoke ring is deciding which one matters to you. We are happy to talk each option through so you can feel where your priorities really lie.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is chemically and physically a diamond — the same carbon structure, the same hardness. On the Mohs scale a diamond sits at 10, the hardest of all, and a lab-grown stone shares that. The difference is only in where it formed.
There are two ways these diamonds are grown. HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) recreates the intense conditions found deep in the earth. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) builds the crystal up from a carbon-rich gas. Both produce a true diamond; the method is part of the story rather than a mark of quality.
If you would like the fuller picture, our companion guide explains what lab diamonds are in more depth, and we look at settings and styles in our piece on lab-grown diamond rings.
How these stones are assessed
Independent assessment matters, and it is worth understanding how it works. GIA independently assesses both natural and lab-grown stones against the same 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat. The form of report for a lab-grown stone may differ from that of a natural one, so it is not quite right to say the two are graded identically, but the same careful criteria are applied.
One small point on colour: the familiar D-to-Z colour scale is the natural-diamond scale. When you are comparing stones, our specialists will make sure you are reading the paperwork correctly and comparing the qualities that genuinely affect how your ring looks and lasts.
Lab-grown versus natural: how to decide
There is no wrong choice here. A natural diamond carries the romance of having formed over an unimaginable span of time. A lab-grown diamond offers that same brilliance with more headroom in the budget for the choices above. Many couples find the decision comes down to what they most want the ring to express.
Our role is to help you weigh it up honestly. We will show you comparable stones side by side, explain what you are looking at, and let you take your time. There is never any pressure to lean one way or the other.

Making it personal
Whichever stone you choose, the ring around it is where the personality lives. This is where bespoke comes into its own: the metal, the setting, the profile of the band, the little details that make it unmistakably yours. Our specialists are GIA-certified, every piece is made in our UK workshop, and we work in 100% recycled metals.
You do not need to come to us to begin. Our specialists cover West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Greater London, travelling to you for a home visit, and you are always welcome at our showroom at 64 South Street, Chichester. Wherever you start, the conversation is unhurried and led entirely by what you want.
If ethics is part of your thinking too, our piece on why lab-grown diamonds are the ethical future of jewellery covers that ground properly.
