Most of us have a piece somewhere — a ring, a brooch, a string of something — that we love but never wear. It carried meaning for someone we loved, and now it sits in a drawer, admired on the rare occasions we open the box, then quietly put away again. Remodelling is how that piece comes back into your life: assessed with care, and remade into something you will actually reach for.
This is unhurried, personal work. Below is an honest look at what it involves — including the moments where the right advice is not to remake at all.
The jewellery that sits unworn
Inherited jewellery often falls out of step with the person who now owns it. The style belongs to another era, the ring sits on a finger it was never sized for, or the piece is simply too precious-feeling to risk on an ordinary day.
The stones and metal still hold everything that mattered — the memory, the connection, the meaning. Remodelling keeps that intact while changing the form, so the piece becomes wearable rather than archived.
First, we assess — before anything is dismantled
Nothing is taken apart until we have looked closely at what you have. Our GIA-certified specialists examine the stones for chips, abrasions, internal fractures and the small stresses that decades of wear can leave behind.
This matters because a stone that looks perfectly sound can be more fragile than it appears. Older cutting styles and years of daily wear can leave a diamond or coloured stone with a weakness that only shows under proper inspection. Knowing this before we begin protects the very thing you are trying to preserve.
We assess the metal in the same pass — how worn it is, whether it has thinned, cracked or become brittle with age. Only once we understand the true condition of every element do we talk about what is possible.

What can be reused, and what usually cannot
As a rule, the stones are the heart of the piece and are almost always reused. A diamond from an old ring can be reset into a new design; coloured stones and old-cut diamonds, with their particular character and patina, are often the whole reason for remaking a piece rather than starting fresh.
The metal is a different story. Worn or fatigued gold and platinum frequently cannot safely be melted down and reused for the new setting — old alloys, solder repairs and metal stress can compromise the integrity of the finished piece. In those cases we remake in fresh metal, so the new setting is sound enough to be worn for another generation.
- Stones: usually reusable, and typically the emotional core of the remodel.
- Worn or fatigued metal: often better replaced than reused, for the strength of the finished piece.
- Sentimental details: an engraving, a hallmark, a fragment worth keeping — tell us, and we will build the design around preserving what we can.
The design conversation
This is the part people enjoy most. We sit with you — at our Chichester showroom at 64 South Street, or on a home visit across West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Greater London — and talk through what the piece means and how you would love to wear it.
We look at the stones you have, sketch directions, and shape a design around your life rather than around a template. Once you have signed off the design, we prepare a CAD render within 24 hours so you can see the new piece before any work begins. A full bespoke remodel typically takes around six to twelve weeks from there.
If you would like to start exploring shapes and settings before we meet, our online Custom Jewellery Builder is a gentle way to begin gathering your ideas.

The honest part: dismantling is irreversible
Here is what we will always tell you plainly. Once a piece is taken apart, it cannot be put back. The original ring, brooch or pendant — as your grandmother wore it, exactly as it was made — no longer exists once the stones are removed and the metal reworked.
For many pieces that is entirely the right choice: the sentiment lives in the stones, and freeing them to be worn every day honours the person far more than a drawer ever could.
But not every piece should be remade. Some are better conserved than remodelled — a fine period piece with intact craftsmanship, a design that is historically significant, or an heirloom whose value lies precisely in being untouched. If your piece is one of these, we will say so, even though it means recommending against the work. We would far rather you keep something irreplaceable than remake it and later wish you hadn't.
Sometimes the answer sits in between: a careful restoration to make a piece wearable again, rather than a full remodel. We will walk you through the options honestly and let you decide with a clear picture in front of you.
Made in our UK workshop, in recycled metals
Every remodel is carried out in our own UK workshop. Where we remake in new metal, we use 100% recycled precious metals — the same care for provenance that runs through all our work.
Because no two inherited pieces are alike, there is no fixed price list for remodelling. Each piece is quoted individually, once we have seen it and agreed the design together. That way the quote reflects your actual piece and the work it genuinely needs — nothing more.
Bringing your piece back to life
If there is something you love but never wear, bring it to us and let us take a proper look. We will assess it honestly, tell you what is possible, and — where remaking is the right path — help you turn it into a piece you reach for every day.
Book a private consultation and tell us the story of your piece. There is no rush and no pressure — just an honest conversation about what it could become.
