Buying earrings online can be tricky. Is a 10mm hoop tiny or standard? Will a 6mm stud cover my piercing?
In the final part of our Jewellery Sizing Guide, we decode the measurements so you can find the perfect scale for your ears.
1. Hoops & Huggies: It’s All About "Inner Diameter"
The most common mistake when buying hoops is looking at the outer size. The fit depends on the Inner Diameter (ID).
How to get the perfect "Huggie" fit:
-
Use a ruler to measure the distance from your piercing hole to the bottom edge of your earlobe.
-
Add 1mm to this measurement for a snug fit.
-
Add 2mm+ for a looser, classic hoop fit.
-
Example: If your piercing is 6mm from the edge of your ear, you need a 7mm or 8mm hoop.
2. Stud Earrings: Visualising the Scale
It can be hard to visualize millimeters on a screen. Here is a quick reference for our diamond and gemstone studs:
-
3mm - 4mm: Tiny. Perfect for second or third piercings, or a very subtle everyday sparkle.
-
5mm - 6mm: The classic everyday size. Noticeable but understated.
-
7mm+: Statement studs. These will cover most of the lower earlobe.
A Note on Piercing Placement
Everyone's ears are unique.
-
High Piercings: If your piercing was done high on the lobe, standard small hoops (8-10mm) might be too tight. Always measure first!
-
Cartilage: Helix and tragus piercings usually require smaller diameters (6mm-8mm) but often need different post gauges.
